How to become an expert

Becoming an expert on any topic is much easier than you think. In the beginning, just bypass topics such as politics, football and flirting with girls, for everything else, you become an expert in no time. Jim Edwards recommends three simple steps:

  • Buy a book in the field in which you want to become an expert and read it from cover to cover.
  • Check out Amazon.com content for at least 5 more books on your desired topic.
  • Make a list of the 10 main problems that people face and the techniques used to solve them.

After this, you will know about a given topic more than 90% of people on this planet.

When you sell something, the whole point is to know a little more about the product than your customer. Goran Aničić once wrote that a programming team struggled for months to sell a Web solution, so that an experienced salesman could close the sale in one afternoon, without knowing anything about the Internet. How to become an expert, a few more tips from Tim Ferris:

  • Join 2-3 professional associations in the given field. There are tons of them in America and everything ends with a credit card and a few minutes on the Internet.
  • Read the 3 best-selling books in the field and make a cross-section of each of them on one A4 page.
  • Hold a couple of free seminars at large and well-known companies or universities.
  • Offer magazines in the field to write text for free. If you are rejected, offer to interview an existing expert. It is important that your name is passed through the newspaper.

And the golden rule: never pretend to be something you are not. It is easiest to always tell the truth.
